You may recognize her from her self-titled children’s book, which incidentally, is one of my all time favorites. Her platform, passed down to her from her sea captain grandfather is simple:
- Go to far away places
- Return to grow old by the sea
- Do something to make the world more beautiful
Miss Rumphius lived by this platform: as a young woman she lived a life of adventure—some would even go so far as to call her a badass. As she grew old she came home to live by the sea. And for Miss Rumphius the third point was accomplished by spreading lupine seeds as she walked around her seaside village one fall. As is seems to be the case with most of my heroes, her neighbors all thought she was crazy. That is until, the following summer, fields of lupines starting blooming all over town.
Sure, we’ve learned a thing or two about invasive weeds since her day, so taking this strategy literally is probably ill advised. Many of us are lucky enough to be living our life of adventure now, but it’s never to early to think about what metaphorical lupine we’re spreading to make the world a more beautiful place.
